Theatre tour raises awareness in the proposed Pinselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park, Guinea
The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation organised a theatre awareness-raising tour from 6 to 29 June 2023, in 20 communities around the future Pinselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park (PSS NP) for the conservation of the Outamba-Kilimi-Kuru Hills-Pinselli-Soyah (OKKPS) transboundary forest landscape between Guinea and Sierra Leone as part of the process of creating the park.
The theatre awareness-raising tour was planned to inform and educate inhabitants of the landscape about the processes involved in creating and managing a protected area. Live theatre performances are often used in environmental protection and conservation to reinforce messages that help change people’s behaviour and given them the opportunity to acquire knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment and skills needed to protect and sustain the environment.
During the tour, themes such as ’The challenges of protecting natural resources‘, ‘The status of elephant protection in Guinea’, and ‘The creation of the PSS NP’ were portrayed in dramas by the actors. The awareness-raising theatre tour in the 20 communities mobilised a total of 1 972 participants, including 650 women and 492 children.
